United Nations Webcast – Statement delivered by Mutua K. Kobia during the 45th session of the Human Rights Council’s interactive dialogue with the Working Group on African Descent. The evils and scourge of racism and racial discrimination not only remains a reality, but continues to be on the rise in various forms across the globe. Obstacles are not new as systematic and structural racism, especially against People of African Descent, has its roots in colonialism and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Eliminating institutionalized racism and ending impunity can only be achieved by addressing these root causes. In light of this, EAFORD called attention to the 20th Anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (DDPA), urging member states to initiate the political will and courage towards its implementation.
United Nations Webcast – Statement delivered by Mutua K. Kobia during the 45th session of the Human Rights Council’s general debate on follow-up and implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (DDPA). EAFORD recalled the request by the UN General Assembly to develop a multi-year programme of activities to strengthen outreach and mobilize the global public to support the DDPA and combat racism, calling on Member States to take appropriate and immediate initiatives towards the commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the DDPA. Among the recommendations, we urged the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to publish the programme of activities for the International Decade in official and non-official UN languages for wide dissemination, and to convene a full day high-level intersessional meeting on mobilizing global support of the DDPA.
United Nations Webcast – Statement delivered by Mathieu Fournier during the 45th session of the Human Rights Council’s general debate on the human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories. Israel’s illegal occupation of the Palestinian Territories, and its violation of the Palestinian peoples’ human rights, including that of self-determination, has persisted for decades. EAFORD asked the Council, when would it end? Under this Agenda Item 7, the hope has always been that through a concerted and coordinated effort, States will pressure Israel to do what is right. But what have we seen instead? Certain Member States of this Council have flaunted the misguided notion that this agenda item singles out Israel! To these Member States, you have failed to protect the Palestinian people from the violation of their human rights, which will persist as long as this Council fails to unite under this agenda item in solidarity.
United Nations Webcast – Statement delivered by Mutua K. Kobia during the 45th session of the Human Rights Council’s interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in the Central African Republic. EAFORD noted that in recent years armed groups have targeted humanitarian workers and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) including basic facilities and sites where they take refuge. 1.5 million children desperately need access to essential health services and medicines, reports of malaria and other serious ailments have surfaced, and some of the most vulnerable are recruited by armed forces. Health personnel work under extremely difficult security conditions, and technical assistance is urgently needed for basic nutrition and medical needs in conflict-affected areas of remote parts of the country.
United Nations Webcast – Statement delivered by Mutua K. Kobia during the 45th session of the Human Rights Council’s general debate concerning human rights issues that require the Council’s attention. EAFORD brought the attention of the Council to the arbitrary detention of thousands of innocent Iraqis for sectarian reasons and other human rights issues that fall short of international standards. The army, police, security units and militias each operate their own prisons and the weak judicial system is plagued by corruption and interference. Even UN missions in Iraq and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) are denied interviews with detainees.
United Nations Webcast – Statement delivered by Mutua K. Kobia during the 45th session of the Human Rights Council’s interactive dialogue with the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) focusing on the right to land and the repatriation of ceremonial objects, human remains, and intangible cultural heritage. EAFORD’s intervention addressed the issue of corporate impunity and the urgent need for a UN binding treaty to regulate transnational corporations. Access to justice regarding ceremonial objects and human remains can only be realized when indigenous judicial and legal systems are acknowledged and strengthened by governments and international bodies. In order to increase, promote, and raise awareness, language barriers and other related obstacles and challenges must be overcome in a collaborative manner with indigenous communities, in particular, the translation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, national and domestic law, and international law to indigenous languages.
United Nations Webcast – Statement delivered by Augustine Sokimi during the 45th session of the Human Rights Council’s general debate on the promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development. EAFORD and Geneva International Centre for Justice called on the Council to dig deeper to uncover the facts and the true number of enforced disappearances in Iraq. We have documented enforced disappearances, which deliberately targeted and eradicated entire generations of families on sectarian basis. The victims’ families look to the Council to take real progressive steps and actions towards ascertaining the fate and whereabouts of the disappeared, to further their relentless pursuit of accountability and search for answers, demanding the ever elusive truth and justice that this Council promises but has failed to deliver.
United Nations Webcast – Statement delivered by Mathieu Fournier during the 45th session of the Human Rights Council’s general debate on the oral update by the High Commissioner for Human Rights concerning the situation of human rights in Venezuela. United Nations Webcast – Statement delivered by Mr. Mutua K. Kobia during the 44th session of the Human Rights Council’s interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children. In the report (A/HRC/44/45), the Special Rapporteur analyzed protection gaps in the legal and policy framework to prevent and combat trafficking. Profound changes are needed in the current approach to antitrafficking action, which predominantly tends to prioritize investigation and prosecution of traffickers over victims’ support, empowerment and long-term social inclusion. Moreover, restrictive migration policies contribute to exacerbate vulnerabilities to trafficking and severe exploitation, and hamper the protection of trafficked persons’ rights.
United Nations Webcast – Statement delivered by Mr. Mutua K. United Nations Webcast – Statement delivered by Ms. Eva Kehoe during the 43rd session of the Human Rights Council’s general debate under Agenda Item 3: Promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development. EAFORD jointly urged the High Commissioner and the Council to adopt a more direct approach, less reliant on rhetoric, to protect human rights defenders. In this regard, the UN cannot rely on governments to track and punish the perpetrators, given the links between governments and those generally regarded as responsible for attacks on human rights defenders; it is unlikely that investigations will bear any fruit.

[Warning: Graphic Images!] 42nd Regular Session of the UN Human Rights Council Side-event co-organized by the International Organization for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (EAFORD), Geneva International Centre for Justice (GICJ), and International-Lawyers.Org Wednesday, 25 September 2019 at the United Nations in Geneva, Room XXI. The idea behind organizing this event is to inform the international community, especially UN bodies, about the situation of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Iraq, and to meet the person who was an eyewitness to atrocities in Iraq. Mr. Ali Arkady is a photojournalist that was embedded with an elite unit of Iraqi soldiers, whom he thought were the “good guys”. In the context of the aftermath of the 2003 US-led invasion, they were battling Daesh and fighting for a united and free Iraq. However, as the battle against Daesh progressed, the Iraqi soldiers strayed from their mission and descended into the torture and murder of civilians. Documented in Arkady’s images are graphic scenes of Iraqi soldiers using knives, guns, and live electric wires, among other methods, to torture and kill civilians. Video clips show suspects suspended and beaten, screaming their innocence. Mr. Arkady's footage is clear evidence of the atrocities committed by Iraqi forces that EAFORD, in collaboration with GICJ, have been reporting on for many years to the UN human rights mechanisms. On 19 March 2019, the International Organization for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (EAFORD) and partner organizations hosted an event on the exploitation of Palestinian natural resources by Israel. Over the decades of occupation, the Palestinian people have been systematically deprived of their land, including its natural resources. In the case of the West Bank specifically, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories put it plainly when he said that the natural resources “are largely controlled by Israel and primarily exploited for its benefit.” In addition, Israeli businesses, citizens, and government actors are responsible for significant environmental pollution that has caused serious health impacts and loss of livelihood for thousands of Palestinians. The cumulative effects are leading to long-lasting environmental damage for current and future generations. This event featured two prominent experts on the nature of the issue and the prospects of addressing the problem at the international level: Mr. Michael Lynk, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, and Mr. Alfred de Zayas, Former United Nations Independent Expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order.

On 24 September 2018, the International Organization for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (EAFORD) along with Geneva International Centre for Justice (GICJ), International-Lawyers.Org, and other non-governmental organizations organized and held a side-event on the root causes of the civil war in Yemen. The war in Yemen has resulted in a humanitarian crisis of tremendous proportions. In responding to the crisis, the UN Security Council, under its Article VII powers, established a framework for interacting with the various parties involved. This framework clearly requires all member states, and the UN, to assist Yemenis in pursuing a negotiated, political solution. Nevertheless, the conflict continues, and additional parties have become involved. It has now reached a point where the entire Yemeni population is suffering daily from shortages of the most basic necessities: food, water, shelter and medicines. This side event examined the impact of the report of the Independent Experts and demonstrated how the Security Council resolutions had been implemented by the concerned parties, member states and the UN itself. It also considered approaches to working toward establishing peace in Yemen and ending the bloody conflict. The event was moderated by Mr. Christopher Gawronski, who is working with Geneva International Centre for Justice (GICJ). The International Organization for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (EAFORD) co-hosted a side event entitled “Invasion and Occupation of Iraq” with Geneva International Centre for Justice (GICJ), International Lawyers.Org and other organizations at the Thirty-Seventh Session of the UN Human Rights Council. The event took place on 15 March 2018 from 12h00 to 14h00 in Room XXIV at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. The side event was on the ‘War in Iraq’ which in 2018 marks 15 years since the invasion of 20 March, 2003. This war was an illegal war and a war of aggression without the support of the UN Security Council. The consequences of war must be remembered as it implicates a direct violation of the UN Charter and numerous adverse ramifications persist until today. There was significant opposition to the war, furthermore, the results of the invasion comprise millions of lives lost and the devastation of an entire country. Yet, there remains zero accountability. Four panelists spoke during this side event. The first speaker, Mr. Jan Lönn, spoke about the actions he undertook with his organization in order to stop the war that was planned by the former United States of America (USA) President, George W. Bush, which he declared as a priority in his term in office. Mr. Ahmed Al-Quraishi highlighted what happened during the lead up to the War in Iraq as he reflected on his experiences as an on the ground journalist. The third speaker, Mr. Sabah al-Mukhtar, acknowledged that – unfortunately – accountability for the Iraq war is clearly not in sight. He compared the last 15 years in Iraq with the situation of the country before 2003 and noted that prior to the invasion and occupation of Iraq there was no al-Qaeda, no ISIS, and no internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the country. Finally, Mr. Inder Comar, stated that “democracy is dying” and that democratic norms are at great risk when there is an illegal war taking place and our democracy is at risk when governments remain silent about such a situation as that in Iraq. The International Organization for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (EAFORD), in cooperation with Geneva International Centre for Justice, and International-Lawyers.Org, organized a side event on the occasion of the 36th Session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC). The deteriorating situation in Myanmar has recently led to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims fleeing to Bangladesh from extreme atrocities and killings of men, women, and children. Reports have told of homes and villages being burnt to the ground by forces aligned with the government. Sadly, these grave crimes have been on-going for at least six decades yet little to nothing has been done by the government of Myanmar and the international community to resolve the crisis. In an open letter on 8th September 2017, Archbishop Desmond Tutu condemned the violence and called on friend and fellow Nobel Laureate, the incumbent State Counsellor of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, to condemn the violence, adding “My dear sister, if the political price of your ascension to the highest office in Myanmar is your silence, the price is surely too steep”. Discrimination based on national, racial and religious hatred is widespread and systematic. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, pointed out the situation as “textbook example of ethnic cleansing”. The moderator of the discussion during the side-event was Mr. Curtis F.J. Doebbler and the panelists were Mr. Ahmed Al Quraishi and Ms. Gulnoz Saydaminova. The panel discussed Myanmar government’s actions to halt the mass atrocities against the Rohingya minority in Rakhine State. They examined the widespread violations against the Rohingya Muslim community that can amount to genocide. The panelists brainstormed suggestions for the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar and possible UN actions based on Chapter VII of the UN Charter to restore peace and security, including referral of the situation to the International Criminal Court. On the occasion of the 36th Session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), this side-event entitled “Destruction of Mosul: Civilians in Armed Conflicts” was co-organized by the International Organization for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (EAFORD), Geneva International Centre for Justice, International-Lawyers.Org, the Arab Lawyers Association-UK, the Iraqi Commission for Human Rights (ICHR), Association of Human Rights Defenders in Iraq (AHRD), General Federation of Iraqi Women (GFIW), the Brussells Tribunal, and Mosul Foundation. The side-event shed light on the dramatic impact of the so-called “liberation campaign” on Mosul’s civilians, infrastructure and historical sites. Panelists revealed that Mosul – cradle of civilization and world-renowned artistic and cultural hub – and its 2.5 million inhabitants suffered tremendous losses, and were ravaged by ISIS’ atrocities and by the indiscriminate attacks of Iraqi and coalition forces. Mr. Dirk Adriaensens, Member of the Executive Committee of Brussels Tribunal, and Mr. Rabee Al-Hafidh, President of the Mosul Foundation, were the high-level panelists sharing their insights and discussing the situation on the ground. In light of the grave losses among civilians in Mosul and the almost total destruction of several parts of the city, as well as, the loss of artistic and cultural heritage, this side event also aimed at shedding light on the responsibility of the international community to identify viable strategies for the reconstruction of the city, ensuring justice and accountability for its citizens. The international community has the legal and moral duty to intervene and to lead concerted efforts to ensure reconstruction and reparation. English to Arabic Interpretation

The side event aimed at analyzing the exportation of terrorism through the use of non-state actors and the resulting sectarian tensions in the Middle East. The panel was moderated by Ms. Gulnoz Saydaminova, Senior Human Rights Researcher at Geneva International Centre for Justice, and hosted the following distinguished speakers: Mr. Tahar Boumedra, Former UN Human Rights Chief of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) and Adviser to the Secretary General’s Special Representative for Iraq. His work background allowed him to acquire deep knowledge about the involvement of Iran in the creation of the militias in Iraq as well as in Syria and Yemen. Mr. Sabah Al-Mukhtar, President of the Arab Lawyers Association – UK. As a lawyer, and human rights defender, Mr. Al-Mukhtar has been an outspoken person against the activities of terrorist groups, including the rise of militias and their associated grave human rights violations. He has also analyzed on multiple occasions the role of Iran in the creation and support of these groups and how this is used as a tool to interfere in the internal affairs of its neighboring countries. Mr. Paulo Casaca, Former EU Parliament Member and Founder of the International Co-operation Association ARCHumankind (Alliance to Renew Co-operation among Humankind). Mr. Casaca was a Member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2009 where he chaired the delegation for relations with NATO Parliamentary Assembly. The International Organization for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (EAFORD), in cooperation with the Geneva International Centre for Justice and the organization for Women Journalists without Chains (WJWC), held a side event during the thirty-third regular session of the UN Human Rights Council, titled “Nothing is Safe”. This side event aimed at analyzing the deteriorating human rights situation in Yemen following the Al-Houthi coup d’état and how this is affecting the whole population, including women and children. The Moderator, Mr. Paulo Casaca, a former member of the EU parliament, made a brief introduction on the subject of the meeting, then introduced the speakers of the side event who were: Ms. Tawakkol Karman: 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. Ms. Karman is a human rights activist, journalist, politician, and the co-founder of the human rights group Women Journalists without Chains; Mr. Ibrahim Qatabi: He serves as a UN/U.S. advisor to the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Ms. Tawakkol Karman, in Yemen; Ms. Bushra Hassan Al-Surabi: An activist and the executive director of WJWC; Ms. Aswan Shaher Sa´ad Mohammed: A member of the Board of Trustees of WJWC, and a member of the Syndicate of the Yemeni Journalists. The International Organization for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (EAFORD), in cooperation with the Geneva International Centre for Justice and several other NGOs, organized a side event during the 33rd session of the UN Human Rights Council titled “The Other Face of Terrorism”. The event aimed at analyzing the increasingly concerning role of militias within the framework of combating terrorism in the Middle East, as well as their close connection and ties to regional powers. This often translates into the failure of states to protect civilians and guarantee peace and stability to their citizens. In this regard, the organizers find that it is important to highlight that terrorism cannot be framed into and limited to the actions of one specific group to the exclusion of other state ad non-state actors’ unlawful use of force and violence as a weapon to intimidate and coerce civilian populations, or any segment thereof, to impose their political, religious, or ideological objectives. Doing so, would mean legitimizing all other forms of terrorism, including groups that commit crimes of the same gravity as other officially-designated terrorist organizations. Mr. Gianfranco Fattorini, Human Rights Consultant and moderator for the event, briefly introduced the subject of the meeting, then introduced the two speakers of the side event; Mr. Struan Stevenson, Former Member of the European Parliament, and Mr. Sabah Al-Mukhtar, President of the Arab Lawyers Association – UK*.

Speakers included: Mr. Mohammad Naji ALAW, Coordinator of National Organization for Defending Human Rights (HOOD); Ms. Hooria MASHHOUR, former Minister of Human Rights in Yemen and former President of the National Women Committee; Mr. Hamzah AL-KAMALY, Former Member of Yemen National Dialogue Conference, and Mr. Samir AL-SHAIBANI, Yemeni Academic and Political Analyst.
